NHS Pan Birmingham Cancer Network

  • Role of the governance committee

The network governance committee has oversight of the quality and safety of cancer care via the various network forums and through the reports it receives. Via its membership, which includes representatives from commissioning and provider organisations, the network governance committee seeks to ensure that:

    • there is continuous improvement in processes, outcomes and the patient experience
    • there is increasing equity and consistency of access, and outcomes for patients
    • national and local standards and guidance are set and implemented
The committee receives reports regarding progress against statutory targets including waiting times, peer review and the implementation of improving outcomes guidance. It also receives network site specific group audit reports, annual key performance indicator reports and patient surveys. The network risk register is reviewed by the committee on a quarterly basis.

Through careful analysis of these reports the committee is able to give reassurance to commissioners about the quality of cancer care being provided. Any concerns identified by the committee on receipt of these reports are raised immediately with the relevant organisation and reported to the network board.

The committee meets quarterly. The meeting papers can be found here.
