Help with sexual difficulties
Unfortunately, all kinds of cancer treatments can affect sexual functioning. It is therefore not surprising that sexual difficulties are amongst the most common and longest lasting side effects of treatment if left untreated. Fortunately, we also know that the provision of good information and support can help most couples to overcome their difficulties. Please click on the document below for an example of such information.
-
Intimacy & Sexuality for Cancer Patients and their Partners - a patient information booklet
-
The way we feel about ourselves sexually is influenced by many things – these include things like our self esteem and confidence, earlier sexual experiences, attitudes and beliefs, our body image, physical health and emotional well-being, our relationships, feelings about fertility and current sexual functioning. Finding a way to overcome sexual difficulties may therefore involve psychological, biomedical, psychosexual and couple interventions. Your health care professional will be able to assess and recommend the best approach or combination of approaches to help you and your partner.
Try to feel confident to approach your GP or Cancer Team (e.g. your Clinical Nurse Specialist) for basic information and advice if you are concerned about sexual difficulties. It can at first feel difficult to raise such a sensitive and personal issue but try to remember that they come across such difficulties very frequently and have a good basic understanding about what may be going on. They can also offer referral to some of the expert services located in the Pan Birmingham region, which include:
-
Cancer specific services
Please note that this is not an exhaustive list. Many more individual psychologists, clinical nurse specialists, other cancer clinicians as well as General Practitioners are also very experienced in this field and may be able to offer help with the difficulties you experience.
