Pan Birmingham Cancer Network and Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals through key worker alerts have successfully changed the provision of care for known cancer patients who admit as an emergency. SWBH's ICT department provided a flagging tool and email alert to let Clinical Nurse Specialists know when one of thier patients was admitted as an emergency.

The alerts have changed the provsion of emergency healthcare for known cancer patients whose admission and treatment is now optimised with a supported and speedy discharge.

There was strong competetion but the benefits to patient experierince, trust finances and the rolling out of similar systems across the network were enough for us to be judged winners.

This award demonstrates the value of clinical networks Service Improvement teams working with local clinical teams and IT departments to deliver the right solution to a known issue.
