Aim:
This project aims to implement the principles of enhanced recovery to thoracic surgery at Heartlands Hospital, Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust by optimising all steps of the patient journey from preassessment through to follow up after discharge.
Objectives:- to reduce inpatient length of stay
- to reduce variation in length of stay
- to maintain or improve clinical outcomes
- to maintain or improve patient experience

Aim:
To work with teams at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust and Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust to facilitate the development of enhanced recovery in urology.Objectives:
- reduce length of stay
- redesign pathways
- facilitate speedy post surgical recovery to optimise patient discharge

Transforming inpatient care - enhanced recovery after gynaecological surgery
Aim:
To enable patients to recover from gynaecological surgery and leave hospital sooner by optimising the wellbeing of the patient before, during and after surgery.
Objectives:
To work with the gynaecology multidisciplinary teams at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust and Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust to:- produce baseline data measuring the current length of stay
- carry out gap analysis to determine where each team is
- work with teams to close gaps that are identified
- facilitate in the development of paperwork specific to each unit; sharing learning where possible
- facilitate in the development of network wide patient information for enhanced recovery patients
Progress June 2011:
Walsall Manor Hospital are the first in the Pan Birmingham area to offer patients the benefits of enhanced recovery for gynaecological surgery.

After months of hard work and preparation, Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals have recently become the second trust within the Pan Birmingham Network to offer patients the benefits of enhanced recovery within gynaecological surgery. -

This project aims to implement the principles of enhanced recovery after colorectal surgery at a number of sites across the network by optimising all steps of the patient journey from preassessment through to follow up after discharge.

Tranfsorming inpatient care - enhanced recovery after orthopaedic surgery
Aim:
This project has implemented the principles of enhanced recovery to elective primary hip and knee surgery. This has been achieved through working with staff to optimise patient care from the point of initial referral for surgery through to the patients follow up in the community. Work has been undertaken with both Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust (WHT) and Royal Orthopaedic Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (ROHFT)
Objectives:- To improve the quality of the patients experience and clinical outcomes.
- Reduce the length of elective care pathways across the NHS by sharing good practice principles.
Progress/outcomes:
Two day reduction in primary knee surgery Length of Stay (LOS),
one day reduction in primary hip surgery LOS.
