  • Redesigning colposcopy services


    Aim: 
    To develop a more effective and efficient colposcopy service which meets QA standards at Birmingham Women's Hospital service.

    Objectives: 
    • To develop administrative and data functions to provide efficient support to the clinical service.
    • To increase turnaround time for patient result letters in order to meet national timescale standards.
    • To fully utilise staff resource and increase nurse-led patient cohort.

  • Radiotherapy patient flow


    Aim:

    To reduce the overall length of the radiotherapy pathway in order that it can consistently achieve the 'going further on cancer waits' target and NRAG recommendations for throughput at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHBFT).

    Objectives:
    To work with the multi disciplinary team to improve the flow of patients throughout the entire radiotherapy pathway.


    Chemotherapy patient flow


    Aim:

    To improve the flow of patients through the chemotherapy pathway at UHBFT

    Objectives:

    • To remove the excess waits experienced by patients and to identify what current levels of demand are being experienced by the chemotherapy unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, UHBFT.
    • To develop a system whereby new patients leave the department with their next appointment.

     

    Chemo-radiotherapy patient flow


    Aim:

    To remove the disruption to treatment experienced by patients requiring chemo-radiation at UHBFT.

    Objectives:
    To work with the multi disciplinary teams involved to improve the flow of patients throughout the pathway between chemotherapy and radiotherapy departments.

  • Redesign of chemotherapy preparation


    Aim:
    Use Lean methodology to reduce patient waiting for chemotherapy  and ensure all quality requirements are maintained at Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust.

    Objectives:
    Utilise Lean methodology to improve the flow of work.

  • Oncology - patient pathway optimisation


    Aim:
    Work with oncology clinical teams across the network to optmise best clinical practice and patient experience for patients admitted as inpatients.

    Objectives:

    • The completion and analysis of a demand and capacity study.
    • Reduction of oncology emergency admissions by 15%.
    • To baseline and share current rate of oncology emergencies.
    • Facilitate the implementation and spread of the national transforming in patient care programme winning principles 1.
      Facilitate the implementation and spread of the national transforming in patient care programme winning principles 3.
    • Unscheduled (emergency) patients should be assessed prior to the decision to admit emergency admission should be the exception not the norm.
    • Clinical decisions should be made on a daily basis to promote proactive case management.

    Demand and capacity study for cancer psychology service


    Aim:

    Complete a demand and capacity study to enable service redesign and understand current service provision.

    Objectives:

    • To complete and analysis of a demand and capacity study.
    • To flex the capacity to meet service demand.
    • Identify areas of wasted capacity.
    • Identify areas of duplication.
    • To significantly reduce waiting times experienced by patients for new and follow up appointments.
    • Reduce the waiting list therefore providing patients with timely access to therapy.
    • Understand how to improve patient flow through streamlining administration processes.
    • To improve the quality and timeliness of service provision based on evidence.
