Free oncology training for NHS and public health non-clinical staff - Back to top

The National Cancer Intelligence Network (NCIN) is launching a free on line training programme which is aimed primarily at multi-disciplinary team co-ordinators and cancer registration staff who need to know:
- about cancer–medical terminology, diagnostic tests and treatments
- how cancer services are organised in the NHS
- about cancer types–key risks, including causes, risk factors, signs and symptoms, anatomy and physiology
Other NHS staff can also use it to improve their understanding of cancer.

Be Loud Be Clear - 2012 bowel cancer awareness campaign - Back to top

In support of the Be Loud Be Clear 2012 bowel cancer awareness campaign running in February, the West Midlands Cancer Intelligence Unit (WMCIU) have published a bowel cancer awareness profile.
The profile is a high level user friendly introduction to bowel cancer in the West Midlands, presenting incidence, survival and prevalence for the most recent data available. The document is available on the WMCIU website.

A patient information DVD for lung surgery patients is now availiable - Back to top

A new patient information DVD is now available and provides patients with information that will help them to better prepare for lung surgery. The DVD called Lung Surgery: Education, Exercise and Advice offers patients exercise and education advice for before and after their surgery takes place.
The DVD will be given to patients undergoing surgery at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital but has been to designed to be a valuable resource for any patient undergoing curative lung cancer surgery. It is hoped that the DVD will help to reduce the uncertainty that a patient currently feels about their surgery and it’s after effects.For more information regarding the DVD please contact the thoracic research team at Heartlands Hospital on 0121 424 1895.

Headstrong volunteers wanted at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham - Back to top

Breast Cancer Care is currently looking for volunteers for the Headstrong hair loss advisory service at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
Headstrong is a free service which provides practical support for anyone experiencing hair loss due to cancer treatment.
Headstrong volunteers show clients how to cope better with hair loss by demonstrating a range of headwear, including scarves, hats and hairpieces.
All training will be provided and volunteers are asked to be available for two half days a month.

Macmillan and BID cancer support group - Back to top

Do you have a hearing loss and a cancer diagnosis?
Do you have a relative or look after someone with a hearing loss and cancer?
Birmingham Institute for the Deaf (BID) and Macmillan are holding a new cancer support group at the Deaf Cultural Centre. All are welcome and interpreters will be at the meeting.
The first meeting will be on Tuesday 31st January.
